In Fox's new musical series "Glee," "Nip/Tuck" creator Ryan Murphy attempts to bring all the joy, passion and inherent nerdiness of a high school performing arts class to the small screen.
With a tone that sashays between "Fame" and "Election" (and a cast that's eerily reminiscent of the Burger King Kids Crew), "Glee" has been making a name for itself as a show that's as big on heart as it is song and dance numbers.
The buzz: By now, "Glee" is easily one of the most anticipated new shows of the new season, thanks in part to a clever pilot episode preview a couple months back, directly after a little show called "American Idol" (ever heard of it?). The cast includes Matthew Morrison as Will, the glee club director, Lea Michele as preppy, prissy Rachel and Cory Monteith as the hunkalicious singer/football star Finn. Predictably, Jane Lynch, who has moved on from the underrated Starz comedy "Party Down," steals virtually every scene she's in.
The verdict: There's a lot to be liked in this harmless show about harmless kids going after a harmless prize. Fans of "Grease," and, yes, even "High School Musical" will find a lot to like here; folks who shudder at the thought of high schoolers breaking into song at the drop of a bedazzled fedora will not.
Did you know? Have a feeling you've seen "Glee"'s wheelchair-bound singer Arty somewhere before? That's Kevin McHale, the kidnapped pizza boy from "The Office."
"Glee" premieres Wednesday, September 9, at 9 p.m./8c on Fox.
