Jim James to play Rud show

My new colleague Erin Keane just got this interesting tidbit from Ray Rizzo, who is organizing Motherlodge shows to celebrate The Rud's 25th birthday:

My Morning Jacket's Jim James will play a solo set at The Rudyard Kipling on Oct. 1 (Thursday), part of a three-day celebration of The Rud's 25 years on this Earth. The Jacket is on a siesta after a busy 2008 supporting the album "Evil Urges," but Jim isn't doing much resting, it seems. Jim's side project Monsters of Folk just released its self-titled debut album (a pretty good one, at that, particularly Jim's parts), and this summer Jim released a solo tribute to the late Beatle George Harrison. On a side note, Monsters of Folk play Oct. 31 at the Palace Theater.

Here's info on the Oct. 1 show from motherlodge.com: "Thurs. Oct. 1 - The Rudyard Kipling Hosts Benefit Show and Auction for Center Of Hope Kitchen - $20 for dinner, show and auction, $15 for show and auction. Hosted By John Gage. 7:00 Reception / buffet dinner, 7:30 Shelby Park Soul Stew/John Gage, 8:15 Brigid Kaelin and guests, 9:00 - John Gage, 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Auction and more..."

UPDATE: Here's more info from Rizzo:

Please make a note of 2 additions to our Thursday Night program which will be a benefit for The Center Of Hope's Culinary Training Program at Salvation Army.

- We will have a live auctioneer named Bill Hale

- Yim Yames will be closing the night with a solo set.

So it will go as follows...

Thursday, October 1st

The Rudyard Kipling Hosts Benefit Show and Auction for Center Of Hope Kitchen. Hosted By John Gage

7:00 Reception / Buffet dinner served by Tim Tucker

7:30 John Gage / Shelby Park Soul Stew (Live food and funk with Chef Tim and his band) (on BARSTAGE)

8:15 Brigid Kaelin (and guests) (PARLOR STAGE)

9:00 –15 John Gage (BARSTAGE)

9:15 a.m. Sunday (PARLOR STAGE)

*Auction with Steve Hale will happen sometime after 9, depending on evening, either before or after a.m. Sunday set. (If there is an auctioneer, possibly during if the band is into it.)

10:00 Yim Yames (PARLOR STAGE)

Cover: 20 for dinner, show and auction, 15 for show and auction

Pour Haus: Closed

The Pour Haus has closed. The bar on Shelby Street had served as a music venue for scores of rock shows in Louisville since opening in 2006, including the annual Wax Fang-Danny Glover Cover Band New Years' bashes, Pere Ubu and dozens of Louisville bands. This comes just days after the announcement that The Dame in Lexington was closing. Here's the announcement posted Sunday on The Pour Haus' MySpace page:

"It is with a great amount of shock and sadness that I have to tell you that the owners of the Pour Haus have decided to close. Thanks to all of you who left us with fond memories, we did our best for you."

Earnspiker, who died in April at 39, was one of the city's most respected rock guitarists, playing most recently with Big Rock Show. (Also, very briefly, he was the guitar teacher at the old Music Warehouse for a 16-year-old me -- a great guitarist and a great guy.) Ernspiker's father, Gene, is ill and the auction will benefit him, according to a press release. The sale will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Mom's Music, 1900 Mellwood Ave. The items will be displayed at Mom's from July 20 until the auction.

DJ Jazzy Jeff vs. Cordish

The Kansas City Power & Light District -- KC's version of the 5-year-old Fourth Street Live, both owned by the Cordish Group -- is in a row with DJ Jazzy Jeff over whether the DJ was kicked off the stage (just like Uncle Phil would do!) for playing hip-hop during a performance at the entertainment district. DJ Jazzy Jeff was scheduled to spin disks at the entertainment district, but his set was abruptly cut short, according to stories in the Kansas City Star newspaper. Later, the deejay famous for his decades-long collaboration with rapper-cum-megastar actor Will Smith explained this via Twitter, which was republished by the Star:

“How did they kick me off stage in Kansas City for playin’ hip hop,” stated a posting on DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Twitter page. “I’m a 25-year legend … this is some (expletive).” The message continued: “I mean, I was playin’ (expletive) like “Just a Friend” … it’s a Heineken commercial for god’s sake … 3,000 people were rockin … KC Live sucks … they said they wanted Top 40 … look at the Top 40 list.”

The Power & Light District has said the disagreement had nothing to do with music genre, but over concerns that the volume of DJ Jazzy Jeff's music would damage the facility's speakers. DJ Jazzy Jeff's people say the volume issue was never broached to DJ Jazzy Jeff or his road manager. And the DJ has said the controversy was not about race, as critics have said, but simply about the style of music he was playing. Which seems like an exercise in hair-splitting. Besides, DJ Jazzy Jeff implied in his Tweet, Top 40 contains plenty of hip-hop. The matter of Power & Light District and race is getting national attention from the likes of NPR and the Huffington Post (which contains some lewd language), being paired with another controversy at the Power & Light District that will be familiar to Louisvillians: a restrictive dress code that some argue discriminates against minorities.

Tim Krekel, 1950-2009

Sad news: Louisville music stalwart Tim Krekel has died after an illness. The Louisville native had a long and diverse career in rock music, playing with Jimmy Buffett on the massively popular 1978 album "Son of a Son of a Sailor" and, later, releasing albums with the Sluggers, under his own name as with the Tim Krekel Orchestra. His last full-length was 2007's "Soul Season." Over the years, Krekel earned a bounty of fans around town and well beyond, and he was a favorite of WFPK's listenership, frequently ranking high when the station asked listeners to list their favorite musicians, songs and artists.

Go to Krekel's MySpace page to hear some of his great songs.

Dinosaur Jr. to play in October

The great Dinosaur Jr. will play on Oct. 16 at Headliners, the first show in Louisville to include founding bassist/indie rock pioneer Lou Barlow since the group's reunion. Dinosaur Jr. has a new album, "Farm," slated for release tomorrow on the ever-impressive Jagjaguwar label. "Farm" is only the second album since 1997's "Hand It Over" for J. Mascis, Lou Barlow -- who's other band Sebadoh was quite legendary in its own lo-fi way, and included on-again, off-again Louisvillian Jason Loewenstein -- and the rest. Here's info supplied by concert promoters Production Simple:

"The worry about the reunion of the original Dinosaur Jr. line-up, more than 20 years after their formation and legendary dissolution, was that these guys were just flogging the back catalog as a marketing gimmick. With the release of Beyond, in 2007, the band gave a hearty Marshall-driven "F**K YOU!" answer to those inquiring ears. Restoring the sound established by the opening hat-trick gambit of Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug, the Beyond record continued the band's march into rock greatness by making old ears smile and new ears bleed afresh. And now comes Farm, Dinosaur Jr.'s first double LP and their fifth full length record by the original line-up -- J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph -- set to release on their new label home Jagjaguwar on June 23rd. If Beyond was Dinosaur Jr.'s return to form, Farm is proof that this band continues to deliver that which makes rock worth cranking to 11. At times wholly 70's guitar-epic, at times perfect for sitting by a babbling brook with Joni and Neil, Farm encompasses Dinosaur Jr.'s signature palette - soaring and distorted guitar, unshakable hooks, honey-rich melodies - songs that get into your head and, bouncing around happily, stay there. The ear-catching "Plans" is nearly 7 minutes of classic whipped-topping rock dessert, while "I Don't Wanna Go There" is a meat-and-potatoes main dish, mixing unapologetic lead guitar with straight-ahead delivery a la James Gang or Humble Pie. These two tunes round out twelve tracks propelled by the unique energy of one of America's greatest living rock bands hitting their stride."

Tickets cost $25 and go on sale at 10 a.m. July 10 at Ticketmaster location, ticketmaster.com or (800) 745-3000.

Jim James teams with Oberst, M. Ward and Mogis

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James has teamed with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst (who plays June 30 at Headliners), M.Ward and Mike Mogis to record a new album, "Monsters of Folk." Mogis -- primarily a producer/engineer who's worked with everyone from Rilo Kiley to Lightspeed Champion -- recorded the songs by the famed, rustic musicians. The Jacket released the rock-heavy "Evil Urges" last year, so it looks like James is getting back to the early MMJ roots again. He's also produced a forthcoming collaboration between follow Kentuckians Daniel Martin Moore and Ben Sollee. This "Monsters of Folk" record is slated for release on Sept. 22.

Here's more publicist-supplied info:

"Monsters of Folk began as folklore of sorts, when James, Oberst, Ward and Mogis did their first run of shows together in 2004. Like the musical revue shows that went town to town when rock ‘n’ roll was newly born, the tour was called 'An Evening With: Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward,' although amongst friends and crew, it became affectionately known as the 'Monsters of Folk Tour.' While entertaining audiences coast to coast with gorgeous acoustic melodies and world-weary tales, the foursome vowed to make their way to a studio at some point after the tour’s completion. Instead, the songsmiths went on to individually release some of rock music’s most exciting and essential albums of the last five years – Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning & Cassadaga; My Morning Jacket’s Z & Evil Urges; M. Ward’s Post War and Hold Time. Never ones to forget their promise, when downtime presented itself, they convened in the studio multiple times over two years, with Mogis at the helm of their first recorded effort. The result is as stunning and storied as you would expect it to be."

Oh, and here's a tracklist:

1. Dear God (sincerely M.O.F.)
2. Say Please
3. Whole Lotta Losin'
4. Temazcal
5. The Right Place
6. Baby Boomer
7. Man Named Truth
8. Goodway
9. Ahead of the Curve
10. Slow Down Jo
11. Losin Yo Head
12. Magic Marker
13. Map Of The World
14. The Sandman, the Brakeman and Me
15. His Master’s Voice

Old Crow Medicine Show, Felice Brothers at Waterfront Park

Old Crow Medicine Show, Dave Rawling Machine (featuring Gillian Welch), the Felice Brothers and Justin Townes Earle will play on Aug. 12 at Waterfront Park. Tickets will be $35 advance (!), $40 day of show. They go on sale June 19 via etix.com and Ear X-tacy. Each band does its own twist on folksy roots music, and they'll take the old-timey vibe a step further: This is part of the Big Surprise Tour, something of an old-timey hoedown in which the performers will be joining in on each others' songs for two 90-minute sets. Interesting.

The online retailer eMusic has this charming piece in which mothers of indie rockers discuss their kids' music. For Mother's Day, you know. Bands include the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Okkervil River and the National.
Louisville punk history, archived

I've been meaning to write about this Louisville punk archive literally for years. The website was compiled over the years and completed last August by Louisville artist Doug Maxson, an original Louisville punk who played in great late '70s/'80s bands like Your Food and The D---brains. These days, Doug plays guitar in Minnow. He's spent a great deal of time collecting fliers and photos and LP covers and records and set lists from great, long gone Louisville bands such as Babylon Dance Band and Malignant Growth. It's really fascinating stuff. Clear out some time and look on Maxson's work here. You'll have a greater appreciation of where this town's rock scene came from. And, if you want a full experience, listen to the 2007 compilation "Bold Beginnings" while you're gawking.

Here's an interesting event happening at 7 p.m. Saturday at the fine downtown all-ages club Skull Alley. A note from Skull Alley co-owner Jamie Prott:

Anyway, sounds like fun stuff. While I'm at it, Skull Alley will host a show on May 15 featuring Shedding (members of top-notch Louisville bands Crain, Parlour and the Loved), the Poison Arrows (Chicago band with ties to Don Caballero) and Spritely (formerly Lanai and featuring Evan Bailey of Second Story Man and Sean Bailey, who's one of Velocity's regular Citizen Critics). It'll be $5.

Supergroup Dead Weather to play Coyote's

So Jack White, the Kills' Alison Mosshart, QOTSA's Dean Fertita, the Raconteurs' and Greenhornes' Jack Lawrence banded together in Nashville earlier this year to form a supergroup. They dubbed it the Dead Weather, and it was good. (Listen here.) Now comes word that the Dead Weather will play on June 11 at Coyote's (yes, Coyote's). Tickets are $25 advance, $27 day of show. They'll go on sale Saturday at Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com or at (800) 745-3000.

The Dead Weather's debut album, "Horehound," is slated for release June 9, just days before the show. Louisville doesn't often get shows from non-Louisville bands so close to an album release, so this is quite cool. Also, Louisville photographer Mickie Winters was the first to photograph the band earlier this year. Here's the photo gallery from Spin.

The Production Simple folks say Coyote's will open for shows scheduled before it's sad demise last month. So there's that.

Old 97's to play Headliners

The Old 97's will play July 24 at Headliners. The top-notch, well-traveled alt-country band released its seventh studio album, "Blame It on Gravity," last year to good reviews. Check out songs from the album here. The show will essentially be an Old 97's immersion program -- it will also feature solo performances from frontman Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond. Fun stuff. Tickets will be $15 advance, $18 day of show. They go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at Ear X-tacy and ticketweb.com.

"Burning Fight" author talks Duncan Barlow

The long-defunct Louisville hardcore punk band Guilt will reunite for a couple of shows starting Friday night at Headliners. Led by Duncan Barlow (Endpoint, By the Grace of God), a Louisville hardcore punk legend, Guilt enjoyed a run of albums on the influential Victory Records and played some legendary shows in its hometown. The reunion was sparked after Barlow was interviewed for the forthcoming book "Burning Fight: The Nineties Hardcore Revolution in Ethics, Politics, Spirit and Sound" by Brian Peterson. Peterson answered a few questions for a story about the Guilt show in this week's Velocity, and here are a few of his answers.

How important was Guilt (and Endpoint and By the Grace of God) to hardcore punk in the '90s?

All three of those bands were great and important in their own ways. Endpoint really did a lot of amazing things musically. Although their recordings may now sound "rough" by today's standards, their songs were honest, urgent, and experimental. The lyrics, of course, were also quite compelling and emotional. Endpoint and other early ’90s hardcore bands showed that hardcore didn't have to always have a "macho" sound to be cathartic. They opened up their own personal wounds and struggles for all to see. In turn, people strongly connected with them. Endpoint changed a lot of peoples' lives.

Guilt was among a group of several mid-nineties bands that took experimental/noisy hardcore to another level. Their live show was really amazing. They were so tight and very compelling to watch. I also liked their use of poetic lyrics and imagery. It seemed like the members were dealing with some tough issues, which really came out in the emotion their music inspired.

BTGOG was a throwback to an older style of hardcore. I liked how they had fun while also addressing political and social issues. They were a great band that put on a great show. Rob always really connected with people; he's such an amazing front man.

All three of these bands were important and helped shape hardcore in the '90s.

Duncan famously "resigned" from hardcore through an interview with Punk Planet – although it was really mostly an airing of grievances about a violent and bigoted strain of hardcore that had emerged. Do you think it made any impact?

It made people re-evaluate the violence that sometimes occurs in the scene. Although there has always been an element of danger in hardcore, I don't think people should have to worry about getting slugged at a show for something they supposedly said. Of course, I wasn't there and don't know the exact circumstances of the incident, but I guess I always felt that one of the best things about the hardcore scene was the focus on communication. I think Duncan was trying to make a statement about his frustration with the lack of dialogue that he felt was prevalent at the time as much as that specific incident that you're referring to. I'm sure he has mixed feelings about this incident today, but I think he felt at the time that it was the right thing to do.

Tell me about "Burning Fight." What compelled you to write it, and what did you learn through conducting these interviews?

I wrote the book because I felt that the nineties hardcore era had been overlooked by many. This was the era I was primarily involved with and I felt like so many amazing discussions, debates, bands, zines, and memories happened during the '90s. These things, of course, still occur in the scene, but there was something about the focus on ideas during this time that really resonated with people. I knew there was no way a person could document all aspects of this time, but I felt like I could bring some attention to a few important ideas and bands from the era.

Through the interviews I learned that hardcore really changes people in so many powerful ways. The scene allows a person to develop their own voice; it exposes you to all these unique perspectives on pretty much everything under the sun. Although not everyone I interviewed is still directly connected to hardcore anymore, the ideas, the music, and the community changed them forever.
