Some say nothing beats firing up the ole grill for some summer barbecue. Others say let the professionals do the cooking! Here's a roundup of some of Louisville's finest bbq joints. Visit and search through our restaurant section for even more options.

Mark's Feed Store

Mark's Feed Store

1514 Bardstown Road - Louisville
(502) 458-1570

There's a reason Mark's Feed Store was named Best Barbecue in our 2010 Best Of. This BBQ powerhouse, which has several locations in town, offers many unique food items such as onion straws, honey wings, sweet-fried corn and homemade buttermilk pie. It also offers picnic packages full of food and family packs, which are by-the-pound items.

Doc Crow's Southern Smokehouse and Raw Bar

Grub-N-Scrub/Boss Hog’s BBQ

Grub-N-Scrub/Boss Hog’s BBQ

3501 Cane Run Road - Louisville
(502) 772-1277

A combination carwash and barbecue restaurant: Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it. The concept might seem silly but Grub-N-Scrub offers some seriously good eats.

Shack N The Back BBQ

Shack N The Back BBQ

406 Mount Holly Road - Louisville
502-363-3227

It's a bit of a haul to get there, but it is worth the drive. This family-owned Fairdale, Ky, restaurant offers slow smoked meats and from-scratch sides.

Bootleg BBQ

Bootleg BBQ

7508 Preston Highway - Louisville
(502) 968-5657

There are two places to get BBQ: from a place that advertises "BBQ" and a place that advertises "bar-be-que." The difference? BBQ is better. At Bootleg, the BBQ is made by people who know their way around a pig and spit.

Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot

Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot

3204 Frankfort Ave. - Louisville
(502) 895-3223

The nine-hole miniature golf course out back is what draws most people to this joint, but they often stick around for the barbecue, which is smoked out front on a huge grill. Don't let the biker bar appearance fool you -- the atmosphere is a lively and friendly Frankfort Avenue classic.

Smoketown USA

Smoketown USA

1153 Logan St - Louisville
502-409-9180

Smoketown USA is a family-friendly barbecue establishment housed in a Civil War era building in Germantown. A rummage-sale serves as decoration -- jewelry, clothing, photography, pottery -- allowing customers to shop and dine at the same time. The menu offers classic barbecue sandwiches, ribs, jalapeño cornbread, Spanish rice, and much more.

Scotty's Ribs & More

Scotty's Ribs & More

14049 Shelbyville Road - Louisville
(502) 244-6868

At Scotty's Ribs and More, you can get, um, ribs ... and more! Some of that "more" includes beer at reasonable prices. This joint is mostly out of sight, but it offers barbecue and beer for cheap prices.

Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill

Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill

2525 Hurstbourne Lane - Louisville
(502) 491-7570

Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill is one of the better barbecue and bar combinations in Louisville. All barbecue -- which includes brisket, pork, chicken and ribs -- is smoked fresh on site. The bar scene includes the NFL, college football and basketball packages shown on 31 televisions.
