An Italian-inspired treat is on the menu this summer at Red Hot Roasters, 1403 Lexington Road: a scoop of local, organic ice cream is served with three shots of Red Hot Roasters espresso on top.
“It’s so simple and so delicious,” says owner Sondra Powell. “Until you have it you don’t realize … you say, ‘why am I not doing this every day?’ ”
Three different ice creams will rotate on the menu. Right now Miss C’s vanilla or coffee ice cream made with Waterworks eggs (Shelbyville), JD Country milk (Russellville) and organic sugar is on offer. Caramel ice cream from Comfy Cow or a chocolate hazelnut gelato from Gelato Gilberto also will be offered.
“We love all the local ice creams so we wanted to offer a few different options,” says Powell.
“Affogato means ‘drenched,’ ” explains Powell. “There’s no proper way to eat it. You can either eat the ice cream first or you can stir it up. Most people eat the ice cream first because it’s a million degrees outside. I split the difference. I eat a little bit of the ice cream, and then I stir it up. It’s a perfect blend in the afternoon of a sugar rush and a caffeine rush!”
The drink costs $4.50 and is available through the end of August.
