Kathy Cary of Lilly’s Bistro is “ready for a new challenge,” and is bringing La Peche back. La Peche Gourmet to Go and Cafe, opening in October, will operate in what is currently the private dining room at Lilly’s, 1147 Bardstown Road.
Cary originally opened La Peche in October 1979 and at one time had three locations. “I closed them with good reason,” Cary says, “but I’m ready to open back up.”
“I got a little bug in me several months ago,” Cary says. “ I turned 60 … (thought I should) maybe invent something new. I looked at our space here … and it’s the perfect size to bring La Peche back and put a twist on it.
“The more I thought about it, I thought ‘this is a no-brainer,’” she says. “There is a generation that doesn’t even know who I am.”
Cary’s 23-year-old son, Will, is working with her on the project. “My son has great ideas. And comes from a whole different mind frame than me. It’s fun to have your child bring new ideas in. … In this business you gotta keep challenging yourself. I don’t want it to just be a rehashed La Peche. You can follow a trend or start your own trend.”
The menu will feature “tried and true” dishes like grilled chicken pasta, burgers, vegetarian sandwiches, chicken salad, “lots of great produce, affordable cuts of meat” and a dessert case.
“People are demanding to have our strawberry pie back,” Cary says. “We’re asking our customers what they want, what they miss. And we’re not short on ideas around here. I’ve got a lot of strong heads in our kitchen!”
The cafe will be “a challenge for a staff who’s never done gourmet to go,” Cary says. “I explain that it will be chaos and great all day long.”
