Work is under way in Butchertown Market, 1201 Story Ave., on Jackknife Cafe, a gourmet brunch and casual lunch restaurant. Managing partners Erika Chavez-Graziano, owner of Cellar Door Chocolates (next door to the restaurant), and James Tillett plan a menu that will “bring people back to their childhood,” Chavez-Graziano says. “People will be familiar with (the menu selections), but James will provide a twist to make it our own.”
The sandwich lineup will feature “whimsical” touches. For instance, “We’ve got a bologna sandwich made with Italian imported meat,” says Chavez-Graziano.
“It’s a little more amped up,” Tillett says. “Instead of a Kraft single, we’ll use aged cheddar. It’s an adult version — although kids will like it too.”
Sandwiches, comparable in size to a fast food sandwich, will all cost $4. Other quick-serve items, plus catering and boxed lunches also will be available. Jackknife will serve beer and wine, with “a good selection of local beers plus some greatest hits from around the country,” Tillett says. Breakfast selections will include house-made yogurt and granola.
And how about chocolate? Although they are separate businesses, Chavez-Graziano assures fans of her premium chocolates that “homey, cozy desserts” (including a chocolate option) will be “held up to Cellar Door standards.”
Jackknife will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Opening is set for late September — follow progress at https://www.facebook.com/JackknifeCafe.
