Craig Finn, 'Clear Heart Full Eyes'
The first solo album from the Hold Steady frontman isn’t a radical departure from his band’s brainy barroom rock. Tracks like “When No One’s Watching” and “Rented Room” mix rough-hewn guitars with whiskey-soaked poetry; there’s perhaps a hint more Southern twang, maybe borrowed from frequent Hold Steady tourmates the Drive-By Truckers, but nothing that would deter fans of Finn’s day job. The folksy change-up “New Friend Jesus” leaves you wishing Finn had messed more with the formula, but you can’t fault such a master of the beautiful-loser school of rock for staying in his wheelhouse. –AH
