Forecastle Festival
July 9-11
Forecastle has evolved from quaint beginnings as a small concert in Tyler Park into one of the better national music festivals. The Flaming Lips are the consummate festival band — the shows are big and weird to-dos led by singer Wayne Coyne. The quirky '80s icons in Devo — essentially The Flaming Lips' spiritual fathers — are also known to stage a vivid show, while Widespread Panic maintains Forecastle's ties to the hippie set. Not into weird music? She & Him — actress Zooey Deschanel and indie-folkie M. Ward — and their new album “Volume 2” are achingly sweet and inoffensive. Spoon, Drive By Truckers and emo forerunners Cap'n Jazz are fine additions, too. Plus, Forecastle will have a stage dedicated to practically every Louisville band that doesn't have a record deal, including The DeLoreans, Broken Spurs, Dangerbird and IamIs.
