The Black Keys get better

When blues-rock duos flooded the scene in the early 2000s, the novelty wore off in a few months. But it was interesting watching the indie-rock version of chase-the-dollar marketing, proving that no matter what the style of music there will always be someone looking to cash in on a trend.

Six years later, however, The Black Keys not only survive but have gotten better, crafting a deeper, richer and nastier version of their two-man blues.

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of Akron, Ohio, understand the essence of the blues groove, combining sexual tension, melancholy and celebration to grand effect.

They perform Tuesday at Coyote's at City Block, 116 W. Jefferson St. (9 p.m., $20), where they'll feature songs from "Attack & Release," their latest and, in some ways, best record.
