A few variations on real country music take over The New Vintage Friday and Saturday, with Lexington’s Sturgill Simpson headlining Friday night. Simpson made waves recently opening for Dwight Yoakam, and he’ll be joined by Stone Iris and Local Villains (9 p.m., $8).
On Saturday, Judah & The Lion brings its folkish Americana from Nashville to headline, but will have to deal with a couple of lively locals in DR Country and Kirk Kiefer & Ice Gondola (9 p.m., $5).
DR Country is Darren Rappa’s fractured love-letter to traditional country — it’s honky-tonk with a head wound. Kiefer’s band leans more toward rock ’n’ roll and hasn’t played a gig since a record-release party a year ago, so they should be well rested.
The New Vintage is at 2126 S. Preston St.
