The David Mayfield Parade continues to refine its classic approach to traditional folk and country, delivering plenty of emotionally moving songwriting from head man Mayfield.
But the band has also perfected a mildly unhinged live show, kind of like a hillbilly band on a ’shine binge, with liberal splashes of charm and comedy — except, that is, when Mayfield is trying to break your heart.
Mayfield likes coming to Louisville, and returns Sept. 12 to the Zanzabar, 2100 S. Preston St. (9 p.m., $10).
The tour is promoting the David Mayfield Parade’s most recent album, “Good Man Down,” out in April on Beautywood Records. Mayfield’s guests included Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers and the venerable Doyle Lawson.
