"Poochinski" is the name of an ABC TV pilot that never saw the light of day. It centered around a hard-boiled cop, killed in the line of duty, who returns to life as a talking, crime-solving bulldog. You can watch a clip of it here.
"Harry's Law" is a new NBC legal dramedy created by David E. Kelley ("L.A. Law," "Ally McBeal" and pretty much every other legal show except for "Law & Order"). It stars Kathy Bates as Harriet "Harry" Korn, a former hotshot patent lawyer who, after a series of life-changing events, starts her own law practice on the wrong side of the tracks.
"Harry's Law" is nowhere near as far-fetched as "Poochinski." But here's the kicker: Harriet opens her law firm inside a shoe store, and, if the first couple episodes are any indication, the lawyers will be selling shoes while trying cases. Italics barely begin to express how ridiculous a law firm/show store combo is. Hey, at least "Poochinski" only got as far as the pilot.
The buzz: Bates was her usual, terrific self as the intimidating Sabre head honcho Jo Bennett on the last season of "The Office," and she brings her A-game to "Harry's Law." Filling out the cast are fellow lawyer Adam Branch (Nate Corddry), Harry's assistant (and shoe lover) Jenna Backstrom (Brittany Snow) and Malcom Davies (Aml Ameen).
The verdict: The good: The show has a sweet, refreshingly earnest tone. It's all about helping the underdog at any cost. The bad: Does the universe really need another quirky law procedural? The ugly: It's a law firm. In a shoe store.
