“It was the first meeting we set when we got the movie rolling. Jeff came in and he wanted to know what the story was, what had become of [his character] Kevin Flynn. We didn’t have a script at the time but we had an idea. I gave him a ten minute pitch and a couple storyboards of the effects test.
“I think Jeff was intrigued by the challenge of playing two characters [Flynn and his digitized alter ego Clu] and the opportunity it afforded. He’s always up for trying something new and working with first time directors. Lucky for us he committed early on and appeared in the effects test, which I think in the eyes of the fans really took it to the next level. The moment his eyes appeared on screen at that first Comic-Con [preview] you felt the energy in the whole place. I can’t imagine the movie without him.”
