Season four: The romance
Tender moments: Mulder visits his previous lives and reports with eye-rolling sincerity that Scully was present in each of them. That’s good for Scully, who finds out she’s dying of brain cancer—a development that allows Mulder to convey sympathy at convenient breaks through the rest of the season.
On the subject of children: After an encounter with a family of grotesque hillbilly inbreds [in the episode, "Home," pictured], Mulder and Scully strangely reveal to each other their genetic histories are clean. But Scully’s biological clock goes berserk when she learns that all her ova were taken while she was abducted. Mulder manages to track down a small vial of them, shoring up the already slim possibility she could have a baby.
