You loved the movie, what about the DVD?
Find out as we examine the extras on this week's best movie DVDs...
“KNOWING”
Stars: Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne
Director: Alex Proyas (“I, Robot”)
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "Too ridiculous to be taken seriously and too serious to be dismissed as mindless trash."
Extras: Commentary by Proyas; “Visions of the Apocalypse” and “The Making of a Futuristic Thriller” featurettes.
Worth watching: “Visions of the Apocalypse.” Because we like being kept awake by apocalyptic nightmares. It’s good for our complexion.
Worth skipping: Proyas’ commentary. Not that he doesn’t say interesting things about his movie, but we always like to hear more than one perspective.
Worth adding: The original trailers. Maybe it’s just us, but we always like watching a movie’s trailers right before we watch the movie.
Buy, rent or ignore: Rent.
“THE UNBORN: UNRATED”
Stars: Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman, Meagan Good
Director: David S. Goyer (“Blade: Trinity”)
Formats: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "Generic, underdeveloped and more silly than scary."
Extras: DVD: Both the theatrical and unrated versions of the movie; deleted scenes.
Blu-ray: All of the above extras plus BD-Live functions that include scene sharing.
Worth watching: The unrated version is always your best bet when it comes to a scary movie like this one.
Worth skipping: The BD-Live scene sharing. Keep your scenes to yourself, please.
Worth adding: A commentary, especially if they can get classy co-stars Oldman, Carla Gugino and James Remar to explain how they got involved in this.
Buy, rent or ignore: Rent.
“PUSH”
Stars: Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Camilla Belle
Director: Paul McGuigan (“Lucky Number Slevin”)
Formats: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "It would take some pretty powerful mind control to convince audiences that Push is a winner."
Extras: Commentary; deleted scenes with optional commentary; “The Science Behind the Fiction” featurette.
Worth watching: The deleted scenes, first on their own, and then with the commentary.
Worth skipping: “The Science Behind the Fiction.” What if this information fell into the hands of some super villain wannabe? Huh? Did you ever think of that?
Worth adding: Since the movie was written by David Bourla, who directed “Frankenthumb,” “Bat Thumb” and “The Godthumb,” how about “Pushthumb”?
Buy, rent or ignore: Rent.
