Christian Bale, who plays Batman in The Dark Knight Rises, has issued a statement about the Colorado shootings at a screening of the film.

Bale says, "Words cannot express the horror that I feel." And, he adds: "I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

The star's reaction follows that of movie director Christopher Nolan, who released a statement yesterday expressing "profound sorrow" about the tragedy.

Dark Knight actors Bale, Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were spotted boarding a private plane in France today after their movie's Paris premiere was canceled. Warner Bros. also canceled red carpet events next week in Mexico and Japan.

The shootings at the midnight Friday showing in Aurora, Colo., killed 12 and wounded 58.
