The family of a contestant from Season 14 of ABC's The Bachelor says that 29-year-old Gia Allemand was found in her New Orleans home by her NBA player boyfriend Ryan Anderson on Monday night following an apparent suicide.
People confirmed the news after Allemand died Wednesday following a "critical loss of brain and organ function," her family said in a statement.
After finding Allemand, Anderson called 911 and she was hospitalized at University Hospital in New Orleans, where she was listed in critical condition after what her publicist described as "a serious emergency medical event."
She was taken off life support Wednesday.
Allemand "passed away peacefully with her mother, boyfriend, and other lifelong friends by her side," her family's statement read, in part. "As a practicing Christian, Gia did receive the sacrament of last rites."
The Bachelor alum, a former model, was one of the final three women trying to woo Jake Pavelka during the reality show's 2009 season.
Pavelka tweeted his grief Wednesday, "I had to pull over, I can't stop crying. We have lost an angel."
Vienna Girardi, who was briefly engaged to Pavelka following the Bachelor finale, tells TMZ, "Gia was a beautiful girl and an unbelievable friend. I'm shocked and can't believe what happened to her. She seemed so happy, but you never know the demons people are fighting inside. I will never forget her and will miss my friend forever."
Although she didn't end up winning Pavelka's heart on the show, Allemand later found love with Anderson, who reportedly stayed by her side throughout her ordeal and death.
According to a publicist for both Allemand and Anderson, they are asking for privacy "on behalf of the family."
