3 words. Permanent. Hearing. Loss. The Drive by Truckers have tapped into some sort of vein of southern white geek blues in the base of my weened on Lynyrd Skynyrd gut. I respond to TDBT more than Hold Steady for the same reason I love the preachy whine of Jay Farrar so much more than Jeff Tweedy. The punk and/or pop and what not are great - I love it!- but the dirty whiskey sin stained harmonies of TDBT and Jay Farrar get me drunk, hug me close, kick me in the nuts, and don't tease me when I cry. The Hold Steady write 40 songs about any combination of the same 4 people, the Mississippi , and/or Minneapolis and then play too loud to hear the lyrics. I'm a Catholic river town boy myself. I relate too much to their lyrics and love their music too much not to enjoy them more and more as I become increasingly able to sing along even when I can't hear what they're singing-and I love hearing Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band singing Husker Du covers.

The Hold Steady was great, as always. The redneck venue kind of sucked. Glass beer bottles all over the floor! I probably won't go back to Coyotes. I'm pretty sure the band cut the show short by a song or 2 after some idiots in the crowd showered them with beer.
