Scylar Ladeq felt a void in Louisville’s nightlife scene.
“There was no venue that had jazz on an ongoing basis,” Ladeq said. “There were a lot of people that were missing the Jazz Factory.”
Rather than just complain about it, Ladeq took over the old Jazz Factory space and started Jazzyblu.
Following a few promotional parties meant to create a buzz, the grand opening celebration was held July 3. The crew at Jazzyblu must have done something right, because when I stopped by on a recent Friday night the place was pretty busy.
Ladeq said his hope is to create a lounge atmosphere with Jazzyblu, to offer “an adult environment where individuals can come to relax, unwind, have a cocktail and listen to some live jazz.”
So far, so good.
After paying a $5 cover, my husband and I made ourselves comfortable at a table and enjoyed the sounds of the Jerry Tolson Quartet, which plays every Friday night.
Along with live jazz, Jazzyblu also serves a variety of appetizers and entrees. I had the delicious fried shrimp with fries ($8.50). My husband devoured his entrée of fried catfish and side of smoked oyster stuffing ($8.50). I also tried the Jazzyblu martini ($5), which despite its fun blue color was no joke. One glass of this strong concoction was plenty.
During happy hour, the Jazzyblu martini goes for $2 and patrons can enjoy a complimentary buffet and other drink specials. Jazzyblu also offers a lunch buffet Tuesday through Friday.
Ladeq seems confident that Jazzyblu will survive today’s economic climate, in part because his place offers a night of food and entertainment for an affordable price, and because he believes he’s giving Louisvillians something they want.
“Individuals are still going out, they’re still eating and they’re still drinking,” Ladeq said.
