Since leaving Kentucky more than a decade ago, artist Emily Church has worked to develop her painting, and over those years has had three solo shows at Galerie Hertz. The current show, “Explorations in Mark Making,” marks Church’s fourth exhibit at the gallery, 1253 S. Preston St.
The show includes the mostly abstract paintings and drawings she creates, as she describes, “by twisting the context of knowable objects.”
Karen Wilkin, a New York-based curator and art critic who has written for Art in America, The New Criterion and The Wall Street Journal, called Church’s work “provocative” and reason to “make her a young painter to watch.”
